在1996年的夏季联赛上，17岁的科比遭遇了26岁的胡卫东，两个人展开了一场激烈的对决，尽管最终的中国队输给了湖人队，但是胡卫东面对科比依然占据了上分，两人全场得分也是以36比30领先，胡卫东也向世界展现了中国后卫的强大，而科比更是让中国球迷记住了这个未来必成大器的年轻小伙子。
尽管这不算一场非常公平的对决，因为这是巅峰的胡卫东在和幼年时期的科比对决，那个时候的科比还没有正式登陆NBA，也没有打过正式的NBA比赛，而胡卫东已经久经战场，参加过世界大赛，在经验上也是完全的碾压科比，但是我们依然可以看出胡卫东的强大和科比的天赋。
胡卫东尽管一生没有登陆NBA，但是我们可以看出他是有实力去征战NBA的，而科比面对巅峰的胡卫东，年仅17岁的他就能够做到这一点，可以想象那个时候的科比是多么有天赋的一个球员。

科比-布莱恩特一直以来都被看做是联盟中防守能力做好的球员之一，除了2004-05赛季因为伤病原因以外，自1999-2000赛季以来，科比每个赛季都入选了联盟最佳防守阵容，尽管有部分批评的言论认为科比的球队总是在比赛最后时刻打得会有所松懈。
这个夏天，在随梦之队出战FIBA美国竞标赛的征程中，科比毫无疑问是球队中防守表现最好的球员，而他自己也打算将这种良好的状态保持下来用到湖人的比赛中，并将此做为争夺本赛季最佳防守队员的跳板。
许多优秀的外线球员在20世纪80年代及90年代都曾获得过此项荣誉，包括迈克尔-乔丹，加里-佩顿。但最近的几年，这个奖项却更倾向于那些防守出色的大个子球员，如穆托姆博 ，莫宁，本-华莱士，马库斯-坎比等。
